PRESIDENT'S REPORT: The months are just flying be. Here it is June, halfway thru the year, and I can't remember what happened to January. It does seem like everyone else is in the same boat. We are about to start on our trip to Wichita for the National Square Dance Convention and really looking forward to a little vacation time. We'll be over to Evanston Il for a week before flying back on July 8th.
One of our major highlights, of this past month, was the 3 days we spent marshalling at the U.S. Open golf champion-ship at Torrey Pines. Tues. and Wed. were practice rounds for the pro's and were probably the most enjoyable for us. The pro's would often hit several balls from the fairway to the green to check the condition of the green. Then they would spend 10 minutes around the green hitting short chip shots, out of the bunkers to check the consistency of the sand, and putting from all different angles and lengths to check for how much break there was and how fast the grass was. We spent 2 ½ hours by the 10th green and basically getting a free lesson from the greatest golfers in the world. Thurs we spent 1 ½hours behind the 15th green, another exciting time. Yes Tiger, Phil, and Adam came thru right in front of us. Those 3 days were very tiring as we had very little time to sit down, but it was worth it!!!!!!
The annual board meeting/ dinner/ election of officers is coming up fast, and we urge everyone to make a real effort to attend. We'll be in a totally different venue this year , with a catered dinner, and has all aspects of being a great gathering. It's on Sat. July 12 and the address and directions are printed elsewhere in the news letter.
Our nominating committee has been very hard at work this past 2 months. They have had some problems filling all the board positions but have been very diligent in their efforts. We should all thank them for the fine work done, and the amount of time it has taken them.
Our new class started off with great gusto, and lots of new faces getting their introduction to modern American square dancing. This past Monday we had 7 squares in phase 1 and 6 squares in phase 2. Many, many thanks to all the angels that come in on Monday evenings to help out.
Respectfully submitted,
Howard and Betty Eberly

 | Just like we thank our Can-Doers for their aluminum can donations - we also want to thank all of our club members who donate their time, money and energy making the Whirlaways the great club that it is.
You know that it takes action to make things happen. It's more than just paying your dues and attending club dances. It's giving that little extra, just because it seems to be the right thing to do.
June 20th is the beginning of summer - in case you didn't know. Long-term weather forecasts indicate warmer temperatures, which mean we all must drink more liquids. Hopefully, some of those liquids will come from aluminum cans - which may be recycled through your Half-Aces - Jack, Don and Bob. (Just in case you need a reminder.)
Our list of Can-Doers for May 15, 2008 through June 19, 2008 includes:
Larry Evans, Mary Lien, Jeanne Mitchell, Varia Schwope, Roy & Marilynne Smith, Georgia Stoddard, Shirley Turner, Orville Wills and Jack & Rene.
We thank you all for you continued donations
… Something to think about: Compliment at least three people every day. Your Half - Aces (Aluminum Can Environmentalists) Jack, Don & Bob | | |

The new beginner CLASS is now four weeks into our 17 week program and we still have 20 new dancers learning the art of Square Dancing.
Thanks to the help from the Angels, the new dancers are progressing well according to Caller/Instructor Jim Randall. The Whirlways are truly fortunate to have Jim teaching our Classes. Thanks for a GREAT job Jim! The class managers again THANK all of those who continue to bring refreshments and other goodies to the class. We really have a wide variety of treats and it's usually is gone by the end of the each class. THANK YOU!!
Your Class Managers:
David Sheehan, Jeanne Mitchell, Shirley Turner, Janice Wagener, Don Packwood and Ed & Wilma Kearey

Editor's Note: Ed Kearey (seen here in photograph with his wife Wilma) writes the Classy News column for the Whirlaways Whirlwind newsletter.

We have a new ruling that should be well received. If your name appears on this list and you bring refreshments and help, you do not have to pay to come to the dance. You do have to sign in to enable the correct amount to be paid to the caller.
Please remember that when it is your turn to be on the refreshment committee, it also includes helping to serve all refreshments right after the first tip or when requested by hosts or chairman and making sure that all refreshments have been served. If for any reason, you cannot serve, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to exchange with someone else and then reciprocate. I know that I can depend on you. Thank you.
